HOW MANY MORE ??

16 days 'til crunch time. Don't be caught holding the bag!

FIRST DAY NOT SO GOOD!

It's hard to believe that the RST&FC has more than forty athletes in it's membership. Why is it hard? You shudda been at LVS this evening ( Monday December 15th 2008) to know what I am talking about. It was truly amazing that they didn't think it important to turn up to celebrate THEIR club.

Parents have to take some responsibilty as well because correspondence was sent and updates for everything being done this week were made known.

Again it should never have to be a case where it appears that we are asking for co-operation and that the only time parents seem interested in anything Rising Stars related is when it is competition time.

IT CANNOT AND WILL NOT WORK!!

THANKS!!

How do you begin to say thanks to all those parents who saw it necessary to bring their children to our church service yesterday? How do you tell the ones who missed it that they missed a great service??
I think that it is highly disrespectful that in an event such as this,it wasn't seen as either necessary or important.
Excuses will be made but at the end of the day this was a club event and should've been supported.

THANKS TO ALL WHO WAS THERE

NOT A NURSERY !!

It has always been said that the RST&FC isn't a nursery. True or false?? If it wasn't such,it sure looked that way today at Grand Prix 2. Imagine that with so many athletes in this club and so many parents, only three were on hand to operate the fund-raising effort.

That was ABSOLUTELY tragic. We understand that parents will want to see their children compete but after having met recently,I thought that was sorted out and that things would be different.

Kudos to the President, treasurer and the assistant treasurer. JOB WELL DONE!!

REMEMBER THIS AIN'T ANY NURSERY !

WHEN THE BOW BROKE!

By now those reading this would've and should've known that we had an accident on tTuesday November 25th at training. In case you didn't realise it,it was exactly one year ago that we lost one of our very own.

Imagine the horror then to not only have to relive all that but to experience a budding star literally fall out of the air. TM is a strong and driven guy, but that was a scray sight. The head coach and I took him to a medical clinic and after tests and an xray,he is fine.NO broken bones or internal damage.

A word of advice to all athletes. PLAY IT SAFE ALWAYS!! THE TREE WAS STEADY AND THE BOW STILL BROKE.

It is always good when people acknowledge talent. It is even better when that talent is showcased for all to see. What do I mean?? As if it aint obvious! Grand Prix 1 @ BCC on Saturday 22nd November 2008.

Those who were absent missed what was a meet which forced one spectator to ask me this question: " Waitttttttttttttttt( that was how long she held the "t'), dis is a Rising Stars meet?? Evah damn time I look around I seeing dem?'' Here is my answer : " Steupssssssss ( I held my "s"), unfortunately for u I WON"T ANSWER THAT question." The spectator was my friend.

R WE THERE YET ??

In our daily life we encounter some of the most gut-wrenching situations and wonder if we were in the same situation, what we would do and how we would handle it.

Thursday November 13th 2008 was one such day for me. I travelled with a group of students to a track event which was almost deadly for a student of another school. Imagine a child running and then falling and then other students and human beings ignoring him.

This student had fallen and was apparently having a seizure which included his TONGUE hanging out of his mouth. Two of my students didn't hesitate in giving up top 50 places in that event to help another human being.

Readers may wonder why this information has been posted. Here's why. NO MATTER what the situation is, we can never forget that life is so short it can be taken away in a huff and puff.

My question now is this, R WE THERE YET where we will willingly put others before self ??

I KNOW WHY THE CAGE BIRD SINGS !!

Noted American novelist Maya Angelou wrote one of the most thought provoking novels of our time several years ago. The title of the book is also the title of this post.

Do I know anything about the book? A RESOUNDING NO!! NEVER READ IT but the title has always been catchy.

Now after saying all that, this blogger simply wants to say to athletes, parents, guardians et al,that life as we know it is too short for negatives.

We have a good ( maybe great) thing going and we can never be the best as we want if we hold each other to ransom.

Maya knew why the caged bird sang and I know why THE BARRIER IS IN YOUR MIND.

Grand Prix 1

It never happened. The heavenly showers prevented it. But were we ready mentally??? Sure we were physically. That has never been in doubt and kudos to the head coach and others.

God does work in mysterious ways his wonders to perform.

We have one(1) week to get it right before the next Grand Prix scheduled for the Barbados Community College ( BCC) on Saturday November 15th.

All hands on deck!!

TRAINING

History is made in different ways. There is good, bad and maybe indifferent. The history that we made last week was bad and we will now find a way to make it good.

In the three years that the RST&FC has been in existence, we have never cancelled a training day unless a natural disaster( hurricane, etc) prevented us. Last week we did and had no hurricane.

Some athletes and their parents may think that the postponement of training until Tuesday October 21st was too harsh but that was a decision that was made by the head coach and supported by me.

On the resumption of training and parents feel that their children should stay away, that is their call. Realise that when returning to training the child/children CANNOT restart without a doctor's certificate.

It has also been decided that instead of paying a dollar fine for not wearing the correct colour t-shirt on training day that the athlete(s) not be allowed to train or be given one(1) week's suspension.

GOOD and BAD

Congratulations to Kierre on winning a gold medal at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune,India. Not only did she win but she solidified the faith that was shown in her by the head coach especially.

After all the celebrations ended in India, we almost had a nerve racking tragedy which involved our head coach and other personnel from the Barbados team. Seems as though they were held for ransom while in a taxi in that country.

This only shows us that it is nice to be selecetd to be a representative of our country, but it can also be dangerous when visiting other countries where crime, violence and illiteracy are the norm.

Dirty already

Now it is a given that rain falls, sun shines or we get snow in Barbados athletes gotta train. So when the voice was echoed on Tuesday September 23rd @ 4.00pm, it meant TIME TO GET D FEET MOVING.

HAHA,not long after that tongues were literally wagging, yup I mean stretched out. Hills and cones and jumps and hurdles and lotta bad feelings. CUDDEAR !!

One senior athlete when he had dun ( pant pant) said to me " Write the next one nuh" Now that is a big LOL.

Talking to the head honcho and realising that no training is on Saturday, he said " I ain't know what to do to mek dem snort but I gine find something.Trust me".

So who will be the next to vomit after the Alexandra girl? Wait and See.

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Who dun it?

So the fun has begun and already athletes are saying " dah workout da real hard ya". Whoever said that pain and gain not going togther was not telling the truth.
At one of the recent sessions ALL and yes ALL the seniors had to fight so hard to complete a workout that the head coach said to me, and I quote " If dem tink dat it dun dem real wrong.Imagine dem wanna mek national teams and complaining already?''

SO be prepared for lots of action as the belly burning continues. LOL.

Monday, August 25, 2008

Training begins.

At this time most if not all the members of the RST&FC would have begun training for the upcoming Grand Prix meets as well as the 2009 track season. A very hectic year is ahead for the athletes and with that in mind the coaches have been trying hard to find programmes that will help all members realize some potential.
It's gonna be a longgggggggggggggggg hard year for some.

Young Turks

If you bloggers thought that the 2008 track and field season was over for us, think again. At the recent Caribbean Union of Teachers ( CUT) championships in Tortola, the RST&FC was well represented.
The young turks namely Jerrad Mason, Shakir Sandiford,Tramaine Maloney,Shaquille Hollingsworth,Tristan Alleyne,Todd Lavine and the lone female, young sprint princess Tristan Evelyn were instrumental in helping Barbados to a second ( 2nd) place finish behind Caribbean powerhouse Jamaica.
Well done young ones, well done!

Some of the seniors also did well at meets on the international stage. In Poland Kierre was a commendable finalist making her one of the fastest in the world in the 100m hurdles for junior girls.

At the NACAC U-23 championships Ryan.M.Brathwaite was second ( 2nd) in 13.50 secs in the 110m hurdles which was .01 slower than the 13.49secs he ran at the CAC seniors. It must be noted that this time ( 13.49)will be the new national record in the 110m hurdles after it has been ratified by the Amateur Athletic Association ( AAA).

Also at the NACAC U-23 championships, Kiesha Walkes won a silver medal in the Shot Putt with a throw measuring over 15m.

Kudos to Head coach of the RST&FC for a job well done in Poland.

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

WELL DONE !

Hey. I know that I had promised to update the blog sooner.I just couldn't. Since I made the last post here so much had happened. Rising Stars continued to be the most dominant club in Barbados and that was due to the overall commitment of all the coaches and athletes alike.

With the good comes the bad however and nothing worse than when you are dissed by the very people to whom assistance is given . By now most of the members will realise that one of our own ( could be former) has disrespected the RST&FC. After a management meeting, it was decided that a written apology was all that was required. An email stating such was sent and to date no reply has been made. We have also decided that we will not say anything publicly( in the media) unless it is necessary.

It has been very rewarding to us in RS land to know that this minor infraction didn't deter any of you athletes from making us proud at the 2008 National Championships. Congratulations are made to Kierre,Kenrisha,Liann,Ramon,Ryan,Shakir,Shaquille,Tramaine,Tyrell,Tristan A, little Tristan E and all those who certainly showed that THE BARRIER IS IN YOUR MIND!

Further congratulations to those who made any national teams. At the moment the head coach is in Poland at the 2008 World Junior Champioships with queen of the sticks ( baritone voiced) Kierre B.

A hearty thanks to all those athletes, parents and supporters who worshipped with us on Sunday June 29th at St.Thomas Parish Church. It was appreciated.

Athletes please remember that for the 2009 athletic season, several changes will be implemented. This is as a result of members wavering at the very end of 2008 in what we were trying to do. No monetary penalties will be incurred but false starters will be DQed.

To all those athletes who have pictures taken at the numerous gatherings of the RST&FC, email them to me so I can put them on this blog.

As 2008 limps( I had to use something related 2 track here) I wish to thank all those who have made valuable contributions to the club throughout the year. To our pageant winners - DwayneL and Halana, wear the title with pride as true representatives of all that we are. Thanks also to Miss Layne and Mr.Forde for a job well done. Andrea, St.Elmo,Edward,Trottie , you all did a fantastic job as well.

Babb and I are now taking a vacation after a rather chaotic year and we are hoping to restart where we have left off sometime in August 2008.

GIVE THANKS !!

April 4th was supposed to be a day of celebration for us in the land of the Rising Star. Unfortunately it was not to be. On that day our beloved president said " DE 2 OF UNNAH REAL FOOLISH !! and that was the last time I heard that voice.

Hours after while preparing for a fundraing event, my good friend left me for her home above our own here on earth. Has it been hard, U betcha. In less than a year my little short friend changed us from a 'group' of people with a few negatives into a club of POSITIVES. In our celebrations and disappointments, we must and will never, ever, ever forget M.Y.S.

Exactly one month later I had to say goodbye to that person who singlehandedly molded m einto the person I am to you. Yup again I had to endure the hardest thing one has to go through and that is to mourn a loved one. I am still trying as best as I can to deal with these passings and as the days go by I know that I will have to do so sometime again.

Maya Angelou ( American novelist) wrote a book, " I know why the caged bird sings" and daily that gets me through my inner pain.

After all the above let us give thanks for who we are, what we have and has accomplished and remember that in the midst of all our joys we will encounter sadness.

GOOD 2 B BACK!!

If any of you readers remembers correctly, the last blog was posted prior to the 2008 Carifta games. If any of you were following those games then you will know that history ( in this case HERstory) was written.

Yup that gnarly voiced girl with a penchant for the 'sticks' boomed her way into the annals ( that is a word too) of Carifta history by not only winning gold in the U-20 girls 100m hurdles, but she also broke a year old record and won the covete Austin Sealy award in the process. For those who don't know, this award is given to the single most dominant athlete at the annual Carifta games.

Also at the games our own Kenrisha won gold ( U-17 girls 100mH ) and a silver in the 300mH. Shane won gold in the U-20 boys multi-event and burly Tyrell got double silver in the U-17boys 100 and 400mh.

Those achievements and the ones that I haven't mentioned were some of the reasons peope clamour to be a RISING STAR.

STAY TUNED !!

I am back !!

A king, a queen and a THORN

In the end it came down to who wanted it the most. The 1st annual Mr&Ms Rising Stars was a tremendous success which showcased the talent some of the athletes possess.
Appearing in three categories, the three girls and four boys had the hall of the Lester Vaughan School for themselves and supporters alike. Faint heartedness caused two of the girls to withdraw.

TALENT

Now it was decided that one boy would be the first on stage. That honour fell to talk-a-lot Thorn. HAHA!! U wish!! When time for his performance, not only was he in the dressing room in a tizzy, but the boy was SWEATING like he was about to have a coronary. LOL!.
After all that and the wasting of time, my friend came on stage, forgot the track to the song he wanted and made a mockery( not the word i am thinking) of himself.
Oh well, it had to be someone.

The eventual winner Dwayne gave a comical view of a Bob Marley number with wig and all. People please, I don't know if Dwayne was trying to mask the fact that he is tone deaf with humour, but it was good in a bad way.Whatever that mean.

FORMAL WEAR

The clothes worn by all the contestants were remarkable. All that can be said.

Q&A

Now after giving the contestants( that word again) the questions to take home and learn, can you believe that one of them didn't know the answer? Imagine this. You are a member of a club with a motto no less and you are asked what that motto is. Wouldn't you be EMBARRASSED not knowing ? Go figure powerlifter!
Things got so dread that one of the guys ( Thorn no less), refused to appear in the Formal wear section. At least somebody had to be last and he apparently wanted that distinction.STEUPES!!!

Congratulations are therefore in order to our first Mr.Rising Star Dwayne Layne and Ms Rising Star Halana Gittens.

And to think that they both go to the Lodge School. Enjoy the reign !!!
